The Presidents communication is as follows,
"Gentlemen of the Board,
According to a resolution of the
Board passed a the meeting in August, 1850, therewith submit
an account of all the contingent expenses of the University drawn
forby me since August 1st 1850. The sum exceeds the amount
appropriated by the Board for the entire year + subject to my order.
This excess has been occasioned by several items in Mr John Ballard's
bill against the University, amounting to $69.24, and some $20.00 also
in Mr. S. Miller's account, not included in the estimate at the time
the appropriation was made.
There will be needed to meet expenses during the next term
the following sum, viz.
Janitor's wages $37.00 + Pump for Cistern, (say) $10
Printing Catalogue $35.00 + Contingent $15.00 = $97.00
The approximation made for putting a new roof on the central
building has not been expended, but will be needed this summer, as
longer delay will occasion serious injury to the building
Of the 200 Certificates of Tuition authorized by the Board, only
a small number has been sold, because of the Committee's inability to
procure the services of an efficient agent to dispose of them. If the
speedy sale of the remainder cannot be effected, it would probably be
best to stop all further sales, or offers of them
Two of the Rooms in College (No. 16+70) have been neatly fitted
up and prepared by their occupants at an outlay of sum $10 or 12,
each room. As this is highly favorable to good order, and cleanly
