This paper was never watermarked, but the finer grades of printing + writing papers bare marks of identification. The Ephrats mill was the 4th in Pennsylvania. The water used in the early mills had considerable influence upon the shade or tint of the paper. In the wintertime especially, it was difficult to clarify the water for use in paper. This muddy appearance is noticable in many early American-made papers.

The Bible that Sauer I gave America ws basically the Lutheran Bible, but Saur was not a Lutheran. It was printed because a deeply religious man wished to meet the need for a Bible among his fellows, i.e. not a commercial but a religious undertaking - none of the early American Bibles were money makers (1663, 1743, 1782). Petre America's 1st Bibles Z7771 A5 R8 HEHL - 1744 Sauer I built his own paper mill - he did not use American made paper for his 1743 Bible - rather paper of foreign manufacture - D. Hunter, however, believed that the paper used in both ed. ('43 + '63) was made in this country (cannot be verified by documents though.)

C. Arnoldus is recorded as having signed + dated 1 book in each of the years 1472-4, 1476, 1478 + 79. His total output seems to have been less than 12 ed. Haebler It seems probable that the creator of the type with which the A. Magnus is pritned was Gabriele di Pietro, unless Christoph Valdarffer, who about the same time printed with this type in Milan, had cut it before he left Venice. At all events, it is a type of marked originality, but its vogue was only a short one + as early as 1480 it was superseded by kindred but less original types. C. Arnold printed with it almost exclusively during the

greater part of his limited activity as a pritner. Only in a few books did he use together with this type a heading type which seems to have been based on Ulrich Han's gothic text type. C. Arnold was a native of the Duchy of Prussia + possibly was an assistant in Christoph Valdarfer's printing office. In 1472 he opened a printing office of his own in Venice. During his 1st years he printed exclusively with a roman type + from 1476 just as exclusively with gothic types. The book bearing his signature is dated 1479. - Two recensions of the Compendium theologicae veritatis were published in the 15th C. That with the more flowering explicit printed in Nuremberg, Speyer, Cologne, Ulm, Deventer + Strassburg treated the text as anonymous. That with the breifer explicit, printed in Venice with several Lyons reprints, attributed the text to ALbertus Magnus. The extensive MSS tradition made further attributions to Alexander de Hales, St. Bonaventura, Aegidius de Columna, St. Thomas Aquinas + others. The tree author, Hugo Ripelin of Strassburg (O.P. d. 1268.) was prior of the Dominican convent of Strassburg. Magnus - the most important observer of nature that the middle Ages had yet produced, the greatest naturalist since Pliny. His most valuable studies are perhaps his botanical + zoological works.
