The Brothers of Common life, who had introduced printing into Rostock in 1476, continued to print there until 1530 + in 1526 they printed an ed of the N.T. in Danish + Latin. Of the sismaining printers in Rostock, L. Dietz from Speyer worked there for half a century from 1509 to 1559, apart from a visite to Copenhagen in 1548-50 when he was called upon to printe the Danish Bible. In 1558 he was appointed Univ. Printer. The 2nd 1/2 of the C. saw the establishment of the printing house of Stephan Millemann, who in turn became Univ. Printer + was active from 1561 to 1610. The name of the printer Dietz, 1st appears in 1509, but it is probable his 1st production is that dated 1505 June 7. The 1st Luther Bible in Low German was printed by Dietz at Lubeck in 1533-4. Pforzheimer - Changes, alterations + corrections were made while the book was passing throught the press, with the result that not all copies are exactly similar. The outer forme of sheet R (R^6) in "As You Like It" is presented in one copy as 2 states. In the earlier, p. 193 is numbered 203+204 is 194; the 1st leaf is signed R2 instead of R; the names of the speakers, p. 204 1st col. lines 10-12, are confused 'Orl, Clo, (and) Clo' instead of Clo, WIll, [and] Clo'. In the later states, e.g. the present, all the above errors are corected. - "The Foole doth thinke he is wise but the wiseman. knows himselfe to be a Foole." - Some 750 copies of the First Folio were printed, and about a third of these survive mostly incomplete. The price when complete was probably 20 shillings.
