M. Carey began as a printer but his fame
rests on his later achievement as a publisher.
In 1792 Carey gave up periodical
publishing and devoted his entire energies to
the printing and publishing of books. He
succeeded Isaiah Thomas as the publisher
who most successfully fed the country wide
hunger for educational books and the growing
demand for literature. (1760-1839)

Carey 1st began printing books in 1785, but
his 1st major publication was The Douay Bible
in 1790. This standard English translation of
the Catholic Vulgate was well received and sold
well. In 1792, with no capital of his own,
Carey established a bookshop and became a
major wholesaler of books imported from
Britian based on credit advanced by
British publishers.
