Catholicon - dated 1460 , but possibly printed somewhat later (it is
generally accepted that certain reprintings from the
original type occured as late as the 1470's)
- printed by J. Fust & P. Schoffer.
- suggested that the book was printed from solid slugs or
blocks of type containing 2 lines of text.
Printing in Mexico began about 1539 - a century before the
1st printing in the U.S. - 220 books printed before 1601.
-The interwoven vines ending in round leaves typify the style
used in scriptorie of the Ottonian monasteries at Reichenair &
St. Gall . Unlike the Carolingian rulers , whose scribes & illuminators

worked at imperial court , Ottonian (named for Otto I [912-73])
rulers turned to illuminators at these court supported
monasteries.
-Charlemagne (E 742 - 814) As part of an effort to advance learning.
the written alphabet was clarified & regularized, based on a
script that in Charlemagne's time was assumed to be ancient.
