Lt. Col. Ulrich G. Gibbons, 27, of the 4th Div. says:

I was leading the headquarters column ashore, riding
in the front seat of a command car with my driver, and a radio
operator in the back seat. At the seawall we were stopped by a
traffic jam and sat there watching and listening to the artillery
barrage walking down the wall toward us—every 30 seconds a volley
[crossed out]o[end crossed out] 50 yards closer. Finally I heard one coming that you knew was
going to be on top of us. Down I went into the sand, and it was.
After the crash I raised my head and called up into the car,
"You men come down out of there." From way back under the rear
wheels two voices replied, "Did you call us, Colonel?"
