There seems to be great commotions with
some of the European powers, which indicates
approaching hostilities. Preparations are
making by Prussia, England & France. The
Spaniards appear nearly ready for a revolt.

In consequence of the Warlike preparations
in Europe, Flour has arisen one dollar, or
more P [PER] Barrel. And salt Provisions have
advanced in price. This at first view appears
against the interest of this Island, as all the
provisions expanded here, & for the out fits of
the Ships, most necessarily be imported from
the Continent. But when we take another
view of the subject, it is probable it may give
a different cast to the subject. It seems
the carrying trade has been rather in a
declining state for some time, which has caused
many merchants in the different seaports to embark
in the Whaling business, some of whom having
met with success, it has given life to the
business, consequently, of late there has been
a great measure of prosperity sent to sea in
that business; and the great increase of the
consumption oil in this country, which has
had a tendency to keep up the price of that
article; this has contributed as a strong
stimulus to bring new adventurers into the
Whaling business. Now, if the powers of
Europe should get in to a War together
it would enhance the profet on the carrying
trade, & of course the merchants would
study their interest, by lessening their
