On March 24, 1880, the ship Horatio set sail under the famed Captain Charles Grant from New Bedford to New Zealand and the South Pacific Ocean. Captain Grant began his whaling career at 11 years old and would become master of the Walter Scott by 30. After 55 years of whaling, often accompanied by his wife Nancy Wyer, Captain Grant ended his career with this voyage. Learn more about his final expedition by transcribing his logbook which includes information about their locations, the weather, and other ships they meet along the way, as well as sketches of whales, islands, and ships.

16 1880 Ship Horatio N. Bedford Friday 16 Commences with strong breezes from the April south. Steering on both tackes. At 4pm 4 pm took up the boats. Whales out of sight. To the south Bound latter part looking sharp for whales. At 7:30am nose ship to the east + made all sail Moderate & pleasant weather. At 8:30 am saw sp [SPERM] whales 4 miles to the NE and bound to the south. Made all sail in chase at 11-50 beat ship to the south. So ends Ends 1 sail in sight. Saturday 17 Commences with moderate breezes from the SE. Steering on both tacks. At 2 pm down 4 boats for sp [SPERM] whales 2 miles to the south. At 3 pm one large whale saw the boats before the boats saw him & went of to the windward. At 5pm tack the boats & shortened sail for night. Latter part employed reparing [REPAIRING] the mizz [MIZZEN] top gallant sail. So ends. Lat [LATITUDE] 32.28 S Long [LONGITUDE] 179 Barometer 30 40 [ILLUSTRATION OF WHALE TAIL]

Sunday 18 Commences with moderate breezes from 1 PM SE. Steering south and all sail. At 6 pm [WATER?] shortend sail for the night. At midnight nose ship to the NE. At 6 am made sail & steered north. So ends. Lat [LATITUDE] 32.26 S Long [LONGITUDE] 179 15 W Barometer 30.45
