[[Better Homes]] Aug 39 [August 1939] Chocolate Bavarian Pie 1 tbsp unflavored gelatine, ¼ cup cold water, 3 slightly beaten egg yolks ½ cup sugar, ¼ tsp salt, 1 cup milk scalded, 1 tsp vanilla, 3 stiff-beaten egg whites, 1 cup heavy cream, whipped. Soften gelatine in cold water. Combine egg yolks, sugar + salt slowly add milk. Cook in double boiler until mixture coats spoon. Add softened gelatine, stir until dissolved. Cool. Add vanilla. Fold in egg whites + cram. Pour into crust, sprinkle with ¼ cup wafer crumbs. Chill throughly crumb crust. Blend 1¼ cup chocolate wafer crumbs (about 20 wafers) with ⅓ cup melted butter. Press in 9 inch pie pan.

[[McCall's]] - March 1940. Chocolate Cocoanut cookies: Cream ½ cup each butter or margerine + brown sugar. Beat 1 egg, add. Sift 1½ cups flour, ¼ tsp. salt, ½ tsp. baking soda, add. Cut 1 - 7 or 8 oz. bar semi-sweet chocolate in small pieces, add with ½ cup moist-pack cocoanut Drop by half teaspoons on greased cookie sheet. Bake in moderately hot oven 375°F, 10 min. Makes 50.

[[McCall's]] - March 1940 Almond Devils Food Cake : Add 1 cup water to 1 pkg devils food mix, stir until smooth. Pour into 2 8 inch greased layer cake pans. Bake in moderate oven 350° F. [Fahrenheit] 20-25 min. Prepare 7 minute frosting to half of frosting add ½ cup chopped choc. [chocolate] covered almonds. Spread between layers. Cover top + sides with remaining frosting. Decorate with chocolate almonds.
Walnut Prune Pudding Wash ½ cup rice. Cook over hot water with 3 cups milk until tender. Add ⅓ cup sugar, ¾ tsp salt ¼ tsp nutmeg, ½ cup cooked chopped prune, ¼ cup chopped walnut meats grated rind of 1 lemon. Beat 2 egg yolks, add rice slowly. Pour into a greased casserole. Top with meringue. Bake in moderate oven 325° F. 20 min Add walnut-stuffed prunes on top of meringue for a garnish. Serves 4-6 Serve with consomme, Roast Pork Loin, Candied Sweet Potatoes, Sweet Sour Red Cabbage, Lettuce + Chiffonade Dressing above dessert + coffee.

⅝ cup sugar | ½ cup finely sliced Brazil nuts |
Punch for 50 2 lbs [pounds] sugar, 8 lemons, 6 oranges, 6 quarts water, 1 quart tea, 1 pint grape juice, 1 pint of shredded pineapple, 1 pint of strawberries, 1 quart tea.

[[American Home]] - Jan 1939 "Candies" Spanish Candied Orange Peel Peel from 4 oranges 2 cups sugar 2 cups water ¼ cup red cinnamon candies or Green food coloring + 8 drops oil of peppermint. Cut orange peel into thin strips with scissors. Put in a saucepan, cover with cold water + let come to a boil. Drain, cover again with cold water + bring to a boil again. Drain + add sugar + water. Bring to a boil. Add cinnamon candy or food coloring + oil of peppermint + continue to cook slowly until all but 1 tbsp of syrup has boiled away. Turn strips out on a plate or pan, sprinkle with granulated sugar + roll until each piece is well coated with sugar. Store in covered container. Half the peel maybe [may be] cooked with cinaamon candies and half with peppermint. These colors are particularly appropriate for Christmas.
