Dear Miss Eliza,

It is feelings of deep regret that I heard to-day of your Dear Mother's death and tender my heartfelt sympathy. had I known of it would certainly have gone up yesterday. I did not know she was sick only through the Enterprise. still did not think of the end being so near. I have often thought

of the pleasant day I shared with you last winter. She has allways been dear to me and especially so since our stay in Columbia.

I wish I could go to you in this dark hour but I am so situated that I cannot leave home; but I shall be with you in thought. would be glad to have you come to see us at any time. with very best love and deepest sympathy I am your
