Have-a-Heart Drive which is to be held in our city on Friday, February 14, 1937. Mrs. McGehee asked that the drive be continued for memberships to the Parent Teacher Association for our school. Representing the junior Service Council of Elm Street School Mary Elizabeth Barton, President of the Council, spoke asking for the support of the P.T.A. in connection with the Have-a-Heart Drive in our own school. She read a poem appropriate to the Drive.

The secretary read a note of appreciation to the association from the family of Mr. Dan R. Schroder, husband of Mrs. Schroder, principal of Elm Street School, for sympathy and flowers sent during recent bereavement.

The meeting at this time was turned over to Mrs. Percy Payne, Founders' Day Chairman. A group of fourth grade children under the direction of Mrs. Hamlin sang two songs.

"Lincoln" and "My Flag". Mrs. Payne introduced the speaker of the evening, the Rev. F. L. Conrad, pastor of the Emanuel Lutheran Church who emphatically on "Our Children and Us". The message was received with keen interest by the parents and teachers. A significant part of the program was the traditional candlelight service honoring the founders of the Association. Mrs. Coffield as President of the Parent-Teacher Association for the city lighted the candle for the organizers of the Congress of Parents and Teachers in Washington, D.C., in 1887. Joanne Sechrest and Mrs. Ed Ferree lighted candles in honor of the founders of our own local association. Miss Frances McCrary lighted a candle as representing the teachers. Mrs. Morrison, as president of the local association lighted a candle. At the conclusion of the service an invitation was extended to the parents to visit

in the rooms of their children.

The attendance award went to Miss Grier's fourth grade.

For the March meeting, the Elm Street P.T.A. held a joint session with the Ray Street Association at which time Dr. Huff spoke on Venereal Diseases.

Our April meeting was a tribute to our late Superintendent, Dr. T. Wingate Andrews. At which time Mr. Thomas Dodamead presented to the school the protrait of Dr. Andrews, which now hangs in the Elm Street School Library.

May 11, 1937.

The last meeting of the Elm Street Parent Teacher Association for the year 1936-37 was held May 11, 1937 in the school auditorium.

The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. H. P. Morrison. After the singing of America the Beautiful, the minutes of the February meeting were read. There were no minutes recorded for the joint meeting in March with the Ray Street Association held at Ray Street School. The April meeting of the Association was a tribute to the late Dr. T. Wingate Andrews. At that time Mr. Thomas E. Dodamead presented to the school the portrait of Dr. Andrews.

The treasurer reported no money in the treasury. The money which was in the treasury was used to help defray the expenses for the delegates to the National P.T.A. Convention held in Richmond the week of May 3rd through 7th.

The chairmen of the various committees made the following reports:

1. Child Study Committee reported that all of the Child Study groups for the year 1936-37 have been completed.

2. Speaking in behalf of the music committee for the school, Mrs. Schroder announced that the High Point Council of the P.T.A. had recently endorsed a petition for a music department in our schools of the city. Parents and teachers of the school were invited to a mass meeting on May 12th at the Junior High School. At this meeting a music program for our schools was to be discussed.

3. Mrs. Herbert Hodgin, chairman of the Pre-School Clinic reported that the Clinic was held May 11th and 12th. Thanks were extended to all who helped in making the Clinic a success.
