The entire trial lasted but a few hours and was an outward manifestation
of the shocking degree to which the rights of an accused man can be violated when
he is unable to engage counsel to advise and protect him.

There was no violence connected with my escape from the hospital nor have I
ever been arrested for a crime of violence - yet the prosecuting attorney was perm-
itted to submerge the minds of the jurors in prejudice by direct reference to and
indirect questioning of the past records of my codefendant and myself, and told the
jury that "These two men would as soon kill as spit on the sidewalk." My repeated
objections to the prosecuting attorneys' attempt to present us to the court as vicious
and incorrigible criminals who deserved to spend the rest of our lives behind bars
went unheeded by the court.

I have obtained photostatic copies of the indictments and the Mitts. issued in
my case and have been informed that no stenographer was appointed for the taking of
proceedings and testimoney of the trial.

Thanking you once again for your own interest in this matter and extending the best
wishes of all of us here at Charlestown who have had the pleasure of meeting you, I
remain,

Sincerely yours,
Atwood H. White
