Dear Dr. Van Waters,

Your letter of Jan. 15th was one of your most interesting letters.
In it you told me many interesting things. I certainly enjoyed
it. You must have been in top form from chopping wood.

I appreciate your trying to secure more writing privledges,
but I don't expect too much; I know how it is.

Apparently, you have forgotten about the picture. I should
never have mentioned it in the first place as it is of no great
importance. Sarah's picture. However, if after I have told you
and still you don't remember, I don't want you to send it.

The only thing you could send me is a study book or a magazine.
We have no hand work; it is not permitted. What few things we
can have are sold here, and my wants are few. You have given
me a good many things. Wasn't "Bob Son of Battle" returned?
You forgot to mention the many you have given me. Just how
much have you sent me? I lost my account of it.

Mrs. Sayles wrote a letter to the Judge during my last trial asking
him to be more lenient. At the final attempt at Springfield, she
was against me because of the state atty's influence.
Do you know Mrs. Ruth Hanna McCormick? She is a vaery
wealthy widow, owning the two Rockford newspapers which did
so much to bring about my ruin. I have heard she owns part of the
traction company. I believe that to win her over is to win the
casem and winning her is almost impossible. She doesn't like me.
