REPORT OF DIVISION OF DRAMA AND POETRY

for 1937

It has been a pleasure and privilage to serve you this past year as chairman of the Division of Drama and Poetry. This is a rather new division of the Club, having been adopted only three years ago. Our dear Luella Knott served as chairman for two years.

Endeavoring to expand on this phase of art in our club and with the very kind assiatance and co-operation of the Tallahassee Little Theatre, who so generously provided the talent necessary to stage such a program, the Division of Drama and Poetry sponsored and presented two evenings of entertainment for club members and their friends.

Our first program as presented on Wednesday night, April 7th at 8 o'clock in the club house. Three one-act plays were staged. These were: "A Cup of Tea", a domestic comedy; "Ashes of Roses", a beautiful costume play of the eighteenth century; and "Reno And Return", a present-day domestic farce. Twelve Tallahassee young people played the roles in these three presentations. The Little Theatre furnished refreshments for the occasion. A committee from the Little Theatre joined the Drama Division in greeting our guests and looking after their pleasure. Mrs. O. C. Parker, sr., club president, and Mrs. A. H. Tebault, junior club president,

were invited as special hostesses. Music was furnished by Mr. Eddie Schofield at the piano, and vocal selections were given by Mrs. Wesley Carter and Mrs. George P. Croy.

Our second program was presented at the club house on the evening of May 19th. Three delightful one-act folk comedies were staged. These were: "In Dixon's Kitchen", a North Carolina folk play by Wilbur Stout; "Moonshine", a mountina comedy by Arthur Hopkins; and "Shotgu Splicin' ", a rural North Carolina comedy. Fourteen local young people participated in these plays. Your chairman directed one of them. Ben Stoutamire's String Band was kind enough to furnish music in keeping with the tone of the plays. Vocal selections were rendered by the Leon Hight School Octet. Again the Little Theatre furnished refreshments and joined members of the Drama Division in greeting guests.

The Little Theatre paid all expenses in connection with the presentation of both sets of plays, inclusing the royalties.

I recommend that the Woman's Club sponsor more of these delightful evenings of play acting, since it gives our own young people (and some older ones, too) the opportunity to express themselves in a worthwhile and stimulating manner.

Several members of the committee participated in the state poetry contest. None of the prizes was won by any of these women, however.

Members of my committee are: Mrs. W. V. Knott, Miss Mildred Williams, Miss Kemper Moore, Miss Martha Gates, Mrs. Ora Arnold, Mrs. W. T. Borland, Mrs. Greene S. Johnston and Mrs. Geo. Basenberg.

I have enjoyed serving you. Thank you.

[signed] Maude Haynes Hollowell Chairman of Drama & Poetry Div.
