Howell: "from a journal of the whaling at New Ze[a]land by ship Wm. Thompson [out of New Bedford, Mass.] on east coast of New Ze[a]land [i.e. Curtis Islands];" gives specific geographic locations of whaling successes, circa 1840. Inserted note (found on page beginning with 30 December 1838) belonging to Capt. Howell: list of items wanted; includes separate list with title "in Sidney [Australia]." Inserted correspondence (found on page beginning with 6 January 1838) from Capt. Howell (?, or more likely firm of N. & G. Howell, who owned ship France) to a Lewis Howell, 7 January 1847, New York, providing latter with an abstract of his account balance of $33,735.77. Inserted note (found on page beginning with 6 January 1838), apparently a spelling exercise (word moderate appears numerous times). Inserted handwritten promissory note (found on page beginning with 16 May 1839), apparently for goods purchased in Port Jackson (Sidney, Australia). Inserted note (found in blank pages after last entry), chronometer readings in Pacific. Inserted note (found in blank pages after last entry); list of items wanted. According to Lund, Captain John Egbert Howell killed by whale; account ends while still in Pacific.
