Monday Oct 27th Monday Oct 27th 1845 This 24 hours comes in with fresh gales from East. Steer S by E with all sail. At 3 AM saw Christmas or Noel[']s Island and narrowly escaped running on shore. The breakers on the reef not bing [BEING] 40 rods distant and the bottom plain in sight. When the helm went down for stays[?], at at daylight not being able to fetch by the Island to the Eastward, kept the ship away and ran around to the Westward. At Meridian lowered a boat and went in at the West end of the Island but could not land, the surf being high.
