C.H. Drew Esq

Dear Sir,

I think Mr Hildreth will not say that Mr Bassett applied to him for $9,000. Today is the first any such request has been made to me. I have agreed however to ask the Committee further, and am willing to abide by their decision.

If they are unwilling to increase the sum, I shall hold Mr Bassett responsible for the bargain made with his agent, and to some extent with me, by Mr Bassett. I am to reply to Mr Hildreth by 5 p.m. if possible. I do not wish to make Mr B. any trouble, but I confess I don't like this feature of the affair. I also stated to Mr Hildreth that I had but $8,000 to loan on mortgage, & , he tells me that Mr Bassett said in his application to him -- he wanted "eight or nine thousand", and never before today that he must have $9,000. --

The Commissioner's valuation & the City valuation are $10,000. The estate I am told was sold to Mr Pitman for $13,000, and even if it were worth $20,000, I am not pleased with what seems to me an alteration of the [proposal?] after the terms had been agreed upon by his agent.

Yours truly

A.J. Coolidge Sec.y & Treasr
