To the Mayor and City Council of the City of Seattle Greeting: Whereas there is now being pronted and circulated in this city an certain paper known and designated as the Sunday Breeze Mercury, and also a certain other paper known and designated as the Sunday sun: and Whereas, these papers do smirch the character of our citizens and corrupt the moral of our youth; and Whereas certain of our sister cities, deeming such publications unfit to be read by their citizens, have prohibited their circulation within the corporate limits of such cities; Therefore, we, the undrsigned, most respectfully petition your Honorable Sir and Body to take such action as will effectulally stop the publication and distribution of said papers in our own fair city. 539 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Sept 19/84 approved. Committees Report From Judiciary Comtee on the Claims of J F McNaught recommeding that the amount thereof $80.00 be credited on his assessment for Columbia Street Improvement From the Special Committee on the charges preferred against Police Officer T J Small recommending that he be dismissed from the Police Force. Adopted upn the following vote, to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Frye, Harrington, Snyder, Sox, Yesler & Latimer Against adoption Northrup& Rinehart An now His Honor the Mayor recommends that the Police force be reduced 2 numbers, by reason of said force being larger than necessary Ordered that Officer T J Small be dismissed without predjudice from the Police Force for the reasons to wit: Insubordination & Absence from beat during the hours of duty. From the Judiciary Comtee recommending that the contract for furnishing gas be awarded to the Seattle Gas Light Co for one year & in case of its refusal to furnish for a period of less that 2 years or in case they refuse to allow the awarding of contracts for lighting, cleaning & repairing to the lowest responsible bidder, that the clerk be instructed to advertise for bids for furnishing kerosine lights. Adopted upon the following vote, to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Northrup, Snyder, Sox, Rinehart Against adoption Frye, Harrington, Yesler & Latimer From Gas Comtee recommending that the City take Lamp No 220 at $7.00 & Freight $1.50 total $8.50, that the Gas Co be authorized to send for 48 Lamps at $7.00 with out freight & insurance, also to send for one Doz. globe extra. Adopted The balance of the report recommending the awarding of the contract to the Gas Co. for lighting & repairs is ordered stricken out. Licenses Ordered Issued Ordered that licenses be issued as follows to wit: S Kirschberg for Retail liquor for 3 months from Aug 31 Peter Anderson & Co for Retail liquor for 3 months from Sept 6 Gumbert & Dickman for Retail liquor for 3 months from Sept 1

640 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Be it remembered that on this the 29th day of May 1885 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chambers pursuant to adjournment. The following officers are present towit: His Honor the Mayor John Leary and Councilmen Geo F Frye, W A Harrington, Alfred Snyder, E F Sox, H L Yesler, W G Latimer, W V Rinehart and S D Crockett Thereupon the following proceedings are had: And now the council proceeds with the examination and equalization of hte Assessment roll for the year 1885. Ordered that the following changes be made on said roll John Collins reduced on Hotel Improvements to $25,000. Chas McDonald reduced on Improvements to $300. Ellen K Marshall reduced on Improvements to $6500. P Wickstrom reduced on mortgage to $100. J F McNaught reduced on mortgage to $4370. W D Wood reduced on mortgage to $60. 611 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Sep 21 1888 from same committee granting petition of Thompson and O'Hara for temporary transfer of Liquor license. Adopted. From Same committee on petition of D T Denny & Others asking the Council not to grant licenses for the sale of liquor within four blocks of any school house in the city, recommending that the petition be granted so far as not grant any such license within three (3) blocks of the Central, North & South school houses Also recommending that the Council adopt the policy of refusing to grant any liquor licenses in any part of what is recognized as the residence portion of the City or for any portion of the outlying districts which would necessitate extra expense for the Police Department Adopted. From Committee on Fire & Water rejecting the petition of D H Callahan & others for the abatement of a nuisance in the shape of a sash and door factory on Third Street between Pike and Pine and stating that the committee had notified the proprieters to put a spark arrester on the chimney of said factory. Adopted. From same Committee granting petition of J H Rengstorff for permission to move and repair portion of dwelling house on North half of Lot 5 block 6 A A Denny's addn so far as to give him permission to move his part of the said building a distance not to exceed fifteen (15) feet and close the same in but to add nothing to it that is not in accordance with the provisions of Ordinance No 992. Adopted. from Committee on Streets rejecting petition of D N Hyde for a sidewalk on South side of Bluff Street. Adopted From Same Committee rejecting petition of J F McNaught
