September 18th

at 1 am Strong SSW wind shortened sail to Topsails Foresail, Jib, & Driver. at 3 Hove to with ships head to the Eastd [Eastward] at 5 Filled & made sail to Top gallt [gallant] sails. Fresh SW wind & fine at 6.30 saw the Sadras Hills Bs W 1/2 N 7.30 St Thomas's Mount NW 1/2 W 8.30 Madras Lighthouse NNW 10 miles at 10.15 Shortened all sail & anchored in Madras Rouds. in 8 Fns. & veered to 45 fine cable Bearings at anchor Lighthouse W by N 1/2 N Master attendants & lay staff W by S 1/2 S [in box] at 5.30 Mr. Charles Leigh Midshipman while pulling in the jolly boat unfortunately fell out of her & was drowned.
