15 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Be it remembered that on this the 16th day of November 1881 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to the call of the Acting Mayor The following Officers are present to wit: His Honor the Acting Mayor John Collins and Councilman Thos Clancy, M Desmore, Wm A Jennings, Moses Keezer and Charles McDonald Thereupon the following proceedings are had: The petition of Mr Donavan is heard in relation the work known as the "Commercial Industries of the Pacific Coast", wherepon the following resoultion is presented and adopted Resolved that the Common Council of Seattle fully endorse the work now in preparation by Messers Bancroft & Co in the Commercial Industries of the Pacific Coast Ordered that the Mayor, chief of Police and Health Officer be and they are hereby instructed to take all necessary medicines to prevent the introduction of Small Pox into our city. Ordered that the Law firmof Messers McNaught, Terry McNaught & Mitchell be and they are hereby employed to assist the City Attorney in examining the law and presenting an opinion touching the liability of the City to care for & support the paupers found in our City Limits Ordered that Wm B Jackling be & he is hereby appointed a member of the regular police force for the First Ward until relieved from duty Ordered that the Application of Moses Keezer in relation to Front Street be & the same is hereby referred to Street Committe Ordered that the Council Stand now adjourned attest: E Osborne Clerk Approved John Collins Acting Mayor

480 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE May 21/84 equilization of the Assessment Roll of 1884 And now Franklin Matthias and Executors & Trustees of the Terry Estate petitioned in writing for a reduction in the assessment of Said Estate Laid over. Adjourned until Thursday May 22 at 8 o'clock pm Attest: E S Osborne clerk Approved U M Rasin President of the Council May 22/84 On this the 22d day of May 1884 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to adjournment as a Board of Equalization. Present Councilmen, Thos Clancy, B F Day, Geo W Harris, Chas McDonald, U M Rasin & F W Wusthoff By reason of the absence of His Honor the Mayor H G Struve, Coucilmen U M Rasin is appoointed President of the council to serve during such absence. And now the Council proceeds with the examination and equalization of the Assessment Roll for 1884. The Puget Sound National Bank asks a reduction of their assment. Laid over Ordered that A A Denny & D T Denny be notified to show cause if any they have, why additional property should not be added to their assessment on Monday May 26, 1884 at 8 o'clock pm Ordered that the following changes & Corrections be made is said assessment Roll to wit: C T Dose on sec's 9&10 Tp24NR4E Lots 2&10 reduced to $125. James Mitchell on Lot 3 B 15 Yesler's fractional Block reduced to $50. J W George changed to read under 1/6/of E 1/2 of Lot 1 B 10 Maynard's M N Maddock $1000 on personal property taken off Walter Clancy & McNaught on Block 13 Maynard's reduced to $1200. Adjourned until Friday May 23, 1884 at 8 o'clock pm Attest: E S Osborne clerk Approved H G Struve Mayor

657 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Committee Reports The Comtee on Public Buildings, Property & Grounds make the following report on the Claim of James McNaught for damages on a/c of Main Street Grade. Seattle W T July 3rd 1885 "To the Hon Mayor & Common Council of Seattle Your judiciary Committee have investigated the within claim and report the same back with the recommendation that the same be allowed in the sum of Eight Hundred and Fifty one & 62/100 Dollars in Condition that Mr McNaught will pay the full amount of principle and interest of all special assessments for street improvements upon property owned by him at date of the assessments. Walter Graham Wm A Harrington Alfred Snyder Ordered that said report be & is hereby adopted From Gas Committee recommending a gas lamp for the corner of Spring & 3rd Street. Adopted Applications for Licenses Referred Schoepp & Greeninger, Oscar A Kraus, Lewis Sliver, A E Wayne, James Murphy, Peters & Lunn, Shaw & Alger, H Kersey, Wolters & Co, Bersch & Hink, O P Dahlquist, Wm Grose & Grubb & Johnson Licenses Ordered Issued Ordered that licenses be issued as follows: Thos Clancy for retail intoxicating liquors for 3 mos from July 16 1885 James Miles for retail intoxicating liquors for 3 mos from July 15 John McCary for retail intoxicating liquors for 3 mos from July 15 Abraham Brugger for malt liquors for 3 mos from July 4 E J Powers and Co for retail intoxicating liquors for 6 mos from March 18 Joseph Francisco for retail intoxicating liquors for 3 mos from July 7 Chas G Steinwig for retail intoxicating liquors for 3 mos from July 3 L V Schnyder for malt liquors for 3 mos from July 4 Thomas & Morgan for retail intoxicating liquors for 3 mos from July 11 Bittner & Theiler for malt liquors for 3 mos from July 16
