laugh, and seizing his Rifle in an instant suiting the action to the word aimed at a small piece of wood not larger than my arm floating in the river at a distance of a hundred and twenty yards.

As quick as the flash so quickly sprung into the small Canoe a beautiful boy of ten years of age who paddling the fragile bark toward the target with a skill and rapidity beyond his years, thrust his tiny finger through the perforation made by the ball from his fathers unerring rifle, the young son of the forest called out "tell the white men that your ball hit true".

This gave us an opportunity of complimenting his skill as a dead shot. - which seemed to flatter his vanity and holds good what I have already stated that the lofty pride, and fiery temper of the Indian is alone to be subdued, by kind words and flattering expressions, which soothe and please him as they would a spoiled child.

Here we had a forcible example of this characteristic disposition of the Indian Indigenous, a few coaxing words and kind promises, had the immediate effect to subdue the tiger of the forest, into the meekness of the lamb.

"Me Squaw say", me take pappoose spose you go to Great Spirit — By By come little pappoose so big my hand you know — French mother go sleep long time — my Squaw plenty for little pappoose for eat you know"

Here he could not find words to express to his satisfaction the answer to my question — I no know what you call eat, you know the pappoose? Finding himself fixed as it were for loss of an expression He made his apology like any other gentleman

"Sir unaccustomed as I am to publick speaking I rise etc." My Father me try to speak to you some English, I can't much tell — But my Squaw "like cow, you know", give plenty to him little pappoose, and little white face, for eat all the same as little cow, you know, very good for him you know, make him plenty sleep you know, ugh?

I told the Indian Indigenous to inform his wife that it was my wish to have little "White Face" and the object of my visit was for the purpose of bargaining to her away — In an instant he comprehended the motive of my joke and played it off to the very life in which he seemed to display a deep cunning accompanied with much shrewdness — Not so the Squaw, who seemed rather astonished at her husband's language — which had the effect
