My dear Sir,

When I was at Mt. Auburn last Sunday afternoon, I left my cane, which I value much, in the office at the gate, while leaving a message for you with the men there. - I forgot to take it when I left, but sent out one of my servants the next day, supposing of course it would be safe - but to my surprise found that the man had given it to a stranger who made no claim to it, & had not asked for it as I understand. --
