Dear Sir,
On going by your Tomb on Friday last, I noticed that your Cap had been delivered. It is very well cut indeed, but it seems, that in carting it in, the wagon slipped, or the cap slipped from the wagon some way fell down the hill, and a considerable chip was knocked out on the right hand upper edge of the top.

came to see me this morning & proposed to leave it to me to pay what should be done; but I told him that was beyond any province, but I would write you about it.
It is a pity as the cap is a fine stone & beautifully cut. The only way

to cure it that I know of is to cut a draft or moulding to lean around the outside of the cap, thus, -

in which way the whole of the obnoxious spots will be cut out. I think this will look very well, &, no one but you & I & Mr Gilman will know why it was done.
He is desirous to hear from you very soon what your decision is. - because he has men at leisure now to cut it.
