45 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jul 22 1886 Be it remembered that on this 22th day of July 1886 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to Law. The following officers are present to wit: His Honor the Mayor H L Yesler and councilmen R H Calligan, J Furth, T W Lake, J J Post and G W Young; when the following proceedings were had to wit: Election Returns And now the Council proceeds to canvass the returns of the general Election for City Officers for the City of Seattle on the 12th day of July 1886, with the following esult, to wit: Whole number of votes cast - 2410 For Mayor A A Denny received 1178 votes For Mayor Wm Shoudy received 1221 votes For Chief of Police S W Scott received 1083 votes or Chief of Police Wm Murphy received 1233 votes For Chief of Police Doc Mitchell received 6 votes For Chief of Police J H Woolery received 1 vote For City Attorney C H Hanford received 1083 votes For City Attorney Fred H Peterson received 1287 votes For City Attorney Patsey Carroll received 2 votes For City Attorney U M Rasin received 2 votes For City Attorney J H Lewis received 1 vote For Councilmen for the First Ward for a two year term J M Frink received 371 votes U M Rasin received 109 votes G W Young received 1 vote R H Calligan received 5 votes R Russell received 1 vote C F Reitze received 2 votes L MIller received 1 vote

47 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jul 22 1886 For Councilmen for the Fourth Ward for a term of two years T W Lake received 329 votes Walter Graham received 180 votes For Councilmen for the Fourth Ward for a term of one year T D Hinckley received 327 votes Wm R Phillips received 182 votes Whereupon the Council finds that the name of the persons elected to the several office are as follows to wit: Mayor Wm H Shoudy Chief of Police Wm Murphy City Attorney Fred H Peterson Councilman for the First Ward for a term of two years J M Frink Councilman for the First Ward for a term of one year C F Reitze Councilman for the Second Ward for a term of two years Robert Russell Councilman for the Second Ward for a term of one year C W Coulter Councilman for the Third Ward for a term of two years Jacob Furth Councilman for the Third Ward for a term of one year Joseph Green Councilman for the Fourth Ward for a term of two years T W Lake Councilman for the Fourth Ward for a term of one year T D HInckley and the Clerk is directed to issue the necessary certificates of election to the above named persons Ordered that Council adjourn until Friday July 23rd at 7:30 PM H L Yesler, mayor attest W R Forrest clerk Jul 22 1886

64 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Aug 6 1886 Be it remembered that on this 6th day of August 1886 the Common Council of The City ofSeattle meets inits CouncilChamber pursuant tolaw. The Following Officers are [resent to wit: His Honor the Mayor W H Shoudy and Councilmen C W Coulter, J Furth, J M Frink, Joseph Green, T D Hinckley T W Lake, R Russell and C F Reitze The following Proceedings were had to wit: His Honor the Mayor now submits to the Council in writing his suggestion concerning future legislation. Councilman Furth states that Mr C F Reitze failed toqualify as Councilman for the First Ward within the time required by law and suggests that Mr Rietze be elected by the Council to fill the vcancy caused by such failure to qualify. Councilman Green nominates C F Reitze for Councilman from the First Ward for the term of one year. No other nomination being made the Clerk is instructed to cast the ballot of the Council for Mr C F Reitze which being done C F Reitze is declared elected a member of the Council from the First Ward for the period of one year. Clcetion of Officers On motion the Council proceeds to the election of officers with the following result For City Clerk W R Forrest For City Treasurer L A Treen For Street Commissioner Laurence Cummings For Health Officer Dr E L Smith For City Surveyor Albro Gardner For Custodian of Powder House Ed L Lindsley For Harbor Master Wm Murphy For City Jailor James Bogart
