Governor Ruby Laffoon Home-coming

Madisonville, Ky.

Thursday June 20, 1935.

"This is next to the
happiest day in my life",
said Governor Ruby
Laffoon to ten thousand
home folks at Spring Lake
today. "The happiest day",
he continued, "will be that
on which I return to my
own home county to mix
& mingle and to [word crossed out]
continue to live with the
people I love the best.

Although the morning
was fair & warmer, the
skies became clouded and
hour before Home-coming
festivities were to begin,
and the greater part of
the program was carried

out as a fine drizzle fell
intermittently. But the
crowd which had come to
honor the first
citizen of Kentucky
refused to yield to
rain, and stood,
intensely interested,
throughout the two-hour
program.

The crowd was served
close to 15,000 pounds of
barbecued mutton and
pork, with bread, [word deleted]
pickles, tomatoes and
onions; and close to 700
gallons of burgoo.
