-Thucydides is credited with making objectivity + the
critical analysis of evidence the two fundamental
tools of historical writing. More accurately, his true
genius lay in the subtle manipulation of data into
evidence in support of his arguments under the guise
of objectivity, a teaching technique popular among
his intellectual contemporaries in 5th C. Athens,
the Sophists, + subsequently culminating in the
creation of the legal profession.
- Thucydides was the 1st scientific historian. The
standards + methods he adopted as a contemporary
observer have never been bettered.
