Bartholomaeus de Zauris - 1st signed book is the
Saxo ferato 31 Jan. 1486/7, his 2nd the Mesue of
July 1487. He continued work well into the next
century, printing both at Venice + at portese in
1489 + 1490. Zanis printed upward + of 50 incunabula
During the 16th C he issued a study stream of books,
especially illustrated folio ed. of Latin + Italian classics.
He is perhaps better known, however, as having been
summoned to his native town of Portise in 1489 to print
the town's statutes, the only-early book 1490 printed at
Portese (a small town near Brescia) In the 15th C
Zanni had no device of his own. But in the 16th C
he adopted the figure of St. Bartholomew. He was succeeded
by Augustine de Ianis who worked until 1528.
