Leonardus Achatu - after producing some 5 books at
Padua in 1472-3 + possibly 1 at Santorso (1474) he
became the 1st printer at Vicenza + between the
spring of 1474 + 1497 printed there some 2 score
incuncabula of a rather varied character.

Woodcuts of this period were cut on "planks" of fairly
soft fruitwood. The relief images so produced were
inked with a mixture of boiled linseed oil + lampslack +
printed on the hand press - finished with hand coloring.
Fuchs - hand finished with (later ? by owner)
transparent water color. privately colored
original - well finished color copies were issued by
the publisher.
1542 + 43 herbals exist in both colored
and uncolored copies
