July 30th. Sent the messenger to enquire if the
Mail Steamer had arrived -"it was telegraphed
and would be in the harbour in two hours"
Mr. [space] called to tell us they were going to cut off the water
whilst the pipes were repaired.

Teusday [Tuesday] 31st. Miss Galbraith reached [?] upon
Mr. Hill 10 oclk [o'clock] this morn'g [morning] to see if
the steamer had come. he said "No, but
you need not come again about the
washing. we will send it to you".
Money received for inmates work
during this month £39.3.5

Wednesday, Aug. 1st. Ellen Holmes has only 4 month of her
time to serve, she has been very industrious
and exeedingly [exceedingly] respectfull [respectful] in her behaviour to
those in command.

Thursday, 2nd. Lady Young and Miss Dalton called,
her Ladyship very kindly brought some
"very rare plants" which she gave us. she made
enquiries respecting Emma Fern's general
conduct . told her that she was naughty
and had been punished for swearing, by being
locked up all day in the Committee room.
with bread & water only for dinner and tea.
and to write on her slate. "Thou shalt not take
the name of the Lord thy God in vain".
Told her ladyship that the Refuge was not[underlined] a fit
place for children. that a Reformatory was greatly
needed, she replied that "there was a movement
in that direction." yes but it is proverbial that
