1866.
May 22nd.
Teusday [tuesday]. Susan Davies told the com't she
wanted to go out, because she had
heard that Mr. Roach was in town-
they reasoned and tried to persuade her not to.
but she said "if you wont let me out, I will
climb over the gate"

Wednesday 23rd. Susan hid in the Mangle room
directly after prayers last eve'g &
at bedtime Miss Galbraith was searching for
her, after locking the house door, and
Jenny Barrett said, "I'll show you where
she is if you will unlock the door", when she
got[underlined] it open[underlined], she demanded[underlined] to go [underline] out too [end underline] !! ['with' crossed out]
with much entreaty from Mrs. Roberts and Miss Galbraith &
the Matron she yielded and went to bed.
The iorning [ironing] stove was fixed this eve'g. now we
hope the iorning [ironing] will be done more expeditiously,
it is larger and a much better one than the last.

Thursday 24th. Being the Queen's birthday, was
puzeled [puzzled]to know how to manage
with the inmates, having so much work
and such beautifull [beautiful] drying weather, could
not give them a whole[underlined] holiday, decided to let
them leave off at 3 oclk. and gave them
five tins of jam (enstid[instead] of treacle) for their tea,
a many of the girls, when they hear music on holidays say
they wish they "were outside".
