On motion of Ald Pense seconded by Ald McRossie
Ordered that Mr Ashley's letter be referred to the
Committee on City Property to report

A Communication from Edwin Horsey Chief Engineer
of the Fire Department was read asking permission to station
No 3 Hand Engine &c in Williamsville a Company of Twenty
five men being ready to take charge of it.

On motion of Ald McCammon seconded by Ald Gaskin
Ordered, That the Communication of Chief Horsey be
referred to the Committe on Fire, Water and Gas to report.

A Communication from Peter R Henderson on behalf
of the Montreal Transportation Company was read respecting
Taxes

On motion of Ald Kelvey seconded by Ald Wilson
Ordered, That the Communication of Peter R Henderson
for the Montreal Transportation Company be referred to the Finance
Committee to report therein

A Communication from John Stewart Esquire MD was
read on the subject of the duty of a Mayor of a City &c

On motion of Ald McCammon seconded by Ald Wilson
Ordered, That the communication of Dr John Stewart
be referred to the committee on Harbors Railways &c to report

Applications for the office of Assessor for the present
year were submitted

On motion of Ald Gaskin seconded by Ald Mooers
Ordered that the assessor or assessors who may be
appointed by this Council shall give a statement in
detail of all property exempt from taxation showing
where located and value and also the owner or owners
of same

Ald McKelvey moves seconded by Ald McRossie
That the Mayor be requested to Call a special
meeting of the Council on Monday the 3rd February
for the purpose of electing one or more Assessors and
that the time for receiving applications be extended
until Friday the 31st instant - all the applications to be
in the Clerk's office subject to the inspection of the members
of this Council

In ammendment
Ald Gaskin moves seconded by Ald Mooers
That this council do not now appoint any assessor
or assessors but that they again advertise until the next
meeting of this Council hoping some person may apply
whose qualification may be such that this Council may
consider it the better way to only appoint one man and pay
him a liberal salary so that his whole time may be devoted
to the work - which being put was lost and the orignal
motion was carried
