The general plan of the Chronicle follows that
see #147 of Bergomensis in his Supplementum Chronicarum
printed in Venice in 1483, a revised ed. of which was
issued in 1490. Schedel quite frequently transcribed
entire passages ad literam from "Bergomensis + others
he takes with a few changes.
-M. Wohlgemuth (d. 1516 -age 59 when Chronicle printed) was
in the pre Durer period, as a painter + engraver, second only
among the Germana to Martin Schongauer. He was a
Bavarian. His farme has its chief basis in the fact
that he was the instractor of A. Durer.
-Koberger -died in 1513.
-The text of the 1st 5 folios of the Chronicle is set full
width of the pages. The next 4 folios are set in 2
columns to the page, after which tere is no
consistency in this detail.
-Prints of 69 other cities or topographical scenes were
printed form only 22 woodcuts each the same width
as the pages type (8 3/4") and of varying heights. There are
598 prints of notable persons to represent whom only
96 woodcuts are used.
-The work includes a reference to America, to the game of chess,
to the invention of printing + to medical curiosities including
what is believed to be the 1st depiction of Siamese twins.
-The Lating version runs to 326 leaves but the German
translation of the 297 only because Aeness Sylvius's
description of Europe was abbreviated in the German Version
+ account of Italy omitted
-large blocks of cities - 22 illustrating 69 different subjects
-with 1809 woodcuts printed from 645 blocks. by Michael
Wolgemut, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff + their workshops including
the young Albracht Durer. The most extensively illust.
book of the 15th C + a masterpiece of complex design.
