W. Seres (1548-1550)
1537 - The Matthew Bible was a combination of William Tyndale's
Pentateuch + his New Testament, the remainder of
the Old Testament being Coverdale's translation. The
text was annotated by a theologian (John Rogers0 (1500?-55)[inserted] an intimate friar fo Tindale. [end inserted] who
used the pseudonym of Thomas Matthew.

On the accession of Queen Mery he was the 1st martyr to be burned.

H.F. Moule new. ed. 1968 #74 f0 259x160mm. Black letter
a reprint of Matthew's Bible of 1537 [inserted] printed at Antwerp [end inserted] with the notes, etc.,
AS Herberted Z 7771 E5 H47 Ref. revised; edited by Edmund Becke. 568 ff. [inserted] It is often
called the "Berg Bible." Ps 91 Verse 5 - buggers by night, instead of
terror by night. [end inserted]

Printed in rather peculiar black letter; double column with
65 lines to the full column. References, + a few notes, etc. in
the margins: contents before each chapter.

J.F. Mozley p 179 Matthew's bible was thrice reprinted in Edward VI's reign
1) 17 Aug 1549, by Baye + Seres, edited by Edmund Beck
who writes a preface. But the New Testament agrees (I think)
more with Tyndale (1534) then with Matthew 2) 31 Oct 1549
by T. Raynalde + W. Hyll 3) 6 May 1551 by N. Hyll.
These books are S.T.C. 2077-8, 2083.

- Matthew's Bible - the first English Bible to have obtained
the royal licence, which Henry VIII bestowed upon it.

- In 1538 a 2nd folio edition of the Matthew Bible appeared, +
this is now much rarer than the first. In 1540 an
edition in 16 mo in 5 volumes was printed by Robert
Redman
