Hitched up the dogs at daybreak and all
hands went looking for open water. We first
went South and then East but did not
find a lead. Returned to camp and hauled
a load of wood and cut some. The woman is
working O.K. today. Saw a raven flying over
camp. Snowing. Light breeze from East. Cloudy.

No open water today so stayed in camp. Fresh
breeze from the West. Cold & Clear.

first time today

Saw what appeared like open water this A.M.
so all hands went with the sled off shore about
3 miles. The ice was grinding and steam was
arising from slush in the cracks, but no open
water was visible. Returned to camp and cut wood.
The sun was visible above the horizon about 5°
at the highest. Woman doing O.K. Clear cold
and variable winds.
