gaining when a female bear with 2 cubs was
seen approaching from the West. She came to
where the boys were hidden and they
killed the old bear and one cub, the other cub
getting away. I left camp and went to help
them. After finishing skinning Maurer returned
to camp and Galle and I wlaid in wait for
a large bear and cub approaching from the
west. Darkness how ever coming on and
the approaching bear's course rather uncertain
We returned to camp. Eight bears were seen
today and literally hundreds of tracks Calm
and cloudy. No surf. A few large cakes of ice
on the Horizon.

All hands stayed in camp all day and did
various small jobs. Calm + cold. Young ice
forming on the sea.

Galle and Crawford were just starting to take
a walk to the west ward when Galle (who
seems to always see things first) saw a bear
near camp to the East. Crawford and Galle
imediatly shot and wounded himer slightly
and she took to the water. From along the
beach abreast of himer and shot himer
thru the head. She was about a two year
old female, with not as much blubber.
