Albert Newlove WWI Letters

ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection includes 49 letters and postcards written by Albert W. Newlove to his parents in Arroyo Grande, California. In his letters, Newlove describes military life, sailing to Europe, the French countryside, his eagerness for battle, and observations of German prisoners. Newlove enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps in early 1918, and trained at Mare Island, California. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division (5th Regiment, 17th Company) and fought on the Western Front in France. In October 1918, Newlove was stricken with influenza and recuperated in a hospital near Bordeaux. Upon return to duty he was assigned to serve in the Army of Occupation stationed in the vicinity of Neuwied, Germany. Once discharged Newlove returned to San Luis Obispo County.

Dear folks: -

Thought I would write you a few lines to let you know that I am well and feeling fine.

Have passed through lots of pretty country and towns since I arrived here. We have lots of music here. You can hear bang, bang every where. There is sure lots of Marines here and they are doing great work. Seen Cheyenne Mahan the other day riding up and down the street on a motorcycle and hollored at him but he never seen me. Haven't seen any of the other boys yet, but might run on to them yet. Woods is laid up in the hospital with the mumps so he never came along with our bunch.

We are sleeping in the barn, etc but we think it is fine especialy

afer a hard days work. I am in in the 2nd division and 17th company and they are all a fine bunch of boys. How is every body at home getting along? Hope you are all well and dont worry about me. How is Ray getting along on the ranch? Hope his crop turned out good. Guess the apricots will soon be ripe. Wish I had some myself right now. The cheeries are ripe here but they are not very plentiful and not as good as we have in the states. Seen my regards to Fred and family and the rest of the Arroyo people. Did you rec'd my letters yet? Havent rec'd any from you folks yet. Well this is all I have to say for this time. Will write again soon. Lots of love to you all. Your loving son,

Albert N.

Dear folks:

I am still well and feeling fine. We are camping out in the woods in dugouts. Have forgot what a good soft bed feels like & wouldn't know what to do if I got in one. Have passed through lots of beautiful country since arriving over here and several good sized cities. The cities in the states look better to me though. Most of the buidings are made of stone. We have a great time

trying to talk to the Frenchmen. Wish I could talk a little French and I would be jake then. One surely realizes that a war is going on after being over here. The Marines have been doing great work against the Huns so far. I hope the war will come to an end before long, which I think will.

Will have lots of experiences to tell you if I come back when it is over. Seen Cheyenne Mahan the other day riding on a motocycle but he never got my eye. Might run on to some of the other boys yet. There is a quite a few boys from California in our company. Woods is in the hospital with the mumps so dont know whether I will see him any more or not. Well I guess I will close for this
