William Morgan was born at Westport on the 29th July 1921. He received his education at the Westport School gaining a Proficiency Certificate. At the time of applying for enlistment in aircrew on the 16th February 1940 he was employed as a rivetter by the Public Works Department.

Sergeant Morgan was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin on the 16th February 1941 and embarked for Canada on the 27th March to train under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Shortly after arrival in Canada he was posted to No. 3 Wireless School, Winnipeg, on the 17th April and then to No. 7 Bombing and Gunnery School, Dauphin, Manitoba on the 1st September 1941. Here on the 29th September he was awarded the Wireless Operator Air Gunner's badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant, afterwards proceeding on the 6th October to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

Sergeant Morgan arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 24th October and remained there until commencing a coure at No. 2 Signals School, Yatesbury, Wiltshire, late in December. On the 3rd March 1942 he proceeded to No. 11 Operational Training Unit, Bassingbourn, Hertfordshire, for crewing up and completion of his training on Wellington bomber aircraft. While with this unit he took part in an operational flight to Bremen before posting to No 218 Squadron, Conversion Flight at Marham, Norfolk, for conversion to Stirling aircraft and then to No. 218 Squadron at Downham Market also in Norfolk. From this base as Wireless Operator of Stirling aircraft he took part in a further twenty seven operational flights, making a total of twenty eight, the targets including Duisburg (2), Osnabruck, Manz (2), Flensburg, Kassel, Nuremberg, Saarbrucken, Karlsruhe, Bremen (2), Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Essen, Munich and Vegesack, in Germany, Genoa (2) in Italy and minelaying to the Frisian Islands (3), in Kiel Bay and off Bordeaux, France.
