Archibald Alexander was born educated at Christchurch Technical College and
prior to his enlistment at Rotorua in July 1942, was employed as a
storeman by T. H. Green & Co. Ltd.

He underwent training at Rotorua and Ohakea and in November 1942
he proceeded to Canada for further training and gained his Wireless
Operator's badge in June 1943 at No. 2 Wireless School, Calgary.
After being stationed at No. 7 Bombing & Gunnery School, Paulson
and at Halton in Manitoba where he was Staff Wireless Operator on
Anson aircraft, Sgt. Archibald Alexander returned to New Zealand and
in February 1944, began training as a gunner in Avengers at 31 T.B.F.
Squadron, Gisborne. In April he was transferred to No. 30 Squadron
and as Wireless Air Gunner in Avenger aircraft piloted by Pilot Officer
Holmes did a tour of operations in the Solomon area. The missions
carried out by this crew included direct hits on enemy gun positions
and on enemy runway at Tobera and Lakunai airstrips in New Britain.
They also attacked supply areas near Kahili and Talili Bay. On one
occasion an enemy shell hit the plane and exploded inside but luckily
no one was hurt. On many occasion during June they sprayed with
oil the Japanese vegetable patches on Bourgainville.

Flight Sergeant Alexander returned to New Zealand in June and after August was flying with
No. 8 B.R. Squadron as Wireless Operator/Air Gunner on Venturas at
Whenuapai. He died on October 28th, 1944 as a result of injuries
received in an aircraft accident on October 26th. Whilst in Canada,
F/Sgt. Alexander was married to Millicent Hazel Bingut. His Wife
came out to New Zealand in June 1944 but has since returned to Canada.
