the children call you foreign devil, as
a mater [matter] of course we [met?] Mr Rankin
and saw Mr [Gandier?]. he seemed mixed
up in a wedding procession which
consisted of presents being carried
to the brides home. all were painted
red or covered with red paper
or cloth chairs tables china in [deal?]
baskets, roast pigs. food of different
kinds above 40 loads, were taken
through the streets by bearers chest of
clothing, & all that was needed for a
Chinese home. I am glad we
saw this sight - as it [seemed?] to be
a [better?] [?] wedding the Guide
explained much to us after
about it. We bought a little Ivory
and then went to a china shop
where we got a Beautiful Service
of very handsome Nankin china
18 beautiful cups & plates so that
it would do for [Sunday night supper.
I was surprised that George bought
it. The cost was about 20 dollars gold
And the effect will I am sure be
strange when we get home - certainly
