We arrived at Pt. Sudan at 6 am and are informed that we must be back to the steamer by 11. We breakfasted at the usual hour and had about 2 1/2 hours for the shore. The port is only about [100] years old, and the British government has erected nice looking permanent stone buildings and the town which lies behind is also neat, permanent, and sanitary - a stone roofed town scattered over a yellow sand desert. The road was hard and we walked as far as the [illegible] village, where square houses with a court yard made of thatch were set close together. We passed there a street of cafes, a shed with tables in front on the street and with much of the cooking there too. [illegible] up to the cafe patronized by nightgowned turbaned Arabs. In one the cooking was done on the hearth, a large fireplace. Another had a row of [illegible] brick ovens in front containing a row of boiling pots. Another had standard...

...oil cases for cooking pots and one used as a stove. We found the experience interesting and as a new type of man the fuzzy wuzzies appeared. We found new attractions. His hair is about six inches long and is a cross between and hair a mixed ancestry. Upon our return to our ship we passed an Egyptian ship loading about 200 sheep. The Fuzzy Wuzzies, so called by Rudyard Kipling, did the loading and the sheep had hair instead of wool. The real attraction of Pt. Sudan was a large and jagged beautifully picturesque mountain. Yellow sand and rock evidently [illegible] in a rare blue haze. It was the most exquisite mountain scene I ever saw. At Pt. Sudan sellers of all things came aboard again and there was much "business". Saturday Nov 18, 1911 Avondale Castle

We arrived at Suez at about 11 am.

We all wished to see the [illegible] canal and so sat up for [illegible] An Egyptian doctor came on board and we were all summoned to the dining room where he passed in procession [illegible] his red fez like a row of [illegible]. They say there is a woman doctor appointed to do his work but of course she didn't come at that time of night as she couldn't work 24 hours each day. We found we were likely to be detained some time so I went to my lumpy bed. It was midnight, but the ubiquitous Mr. [Chart] appeared. Most of the passengers had returned but there were enough up to make bargaining go on at a lively rate and a good deal of it took place under my window. I got to sleep about 2 am and they were still at it. Today we have enjoyed the canal. The scene on both sides is a yellow stretch of sand but frequent camels grazing on the scattered tufts of grass or loaded with freight and driven by curious...

...Arabs, and other ships anchored on the side to permit us to pass, or anchored ourselves to let others pass. Has all been interesting. This canal is owned by a stock company. Great Britain owns one third and France two thirds. Our little ship of 5,700 tons with 400 passengers of all classes paid £1,500 or $7,500 to go through. The company pays 62% dividends but is stowing away a big [illegible] fund. We have passed many delightful, beautiful scenes of men at work with camels. They have been dressed in blue gowns with white turbans and sometimes white gowns and blue jackets. The blue is a perfect complement for the subdued sand of the background and nothing could be more pleasing. They are scenes to make artists rave. We arrived at Pt. Said at 10 pm utterly tired with the long drawn out watering, but delightfully [illegible]...
