To the Council and House of Representatives of the Territory of Wisconsin Assembled
The undersigned petitioners citizens of the County of Saint Croix would respectfully represent that whereas by a late act of the Legislative assembly in attaching this county to Crawford for Judicial Purposes, we are deprived of a resident Sheriff, and as the posting of election notices and other duties devolve upon the Paid officers by Law in the regulation of elections which renders it not only inconvenient for him owing to the great distance he would have to travel, but very expensive to this county - we would therefore request the passage of a Law to the end that all duties devolving upon the said Sheriff by Law in the county as connected with elections, shall devolve upon the Clerk of the Board of County Com missioners of this County - And whereas at the late general election there was but one Justices of the Peace in this county before whom the polls could be opened - the Law requiring two - would therefore request the passage of an act legalising the proceedings in opening the aforesaid polls in the presence of [William R Brown] an acting Justice of the Peace. And your Petitioners would further represent that - Whereas by the act aforesaid we are deprived of a resident Judge of Probate in the County - and as the existing relation be-tween Administrators &c. and Judge of Probate by Law -

requires frequent communications and often personal interview and as the limits of our county embrace so large a Terri-tory. whose citizens generally reside from Two Hundred to Four Hundred miles from the office of Judge of Probate of Crawford County - Whereby rendering the settlement of estates vexations and very expensive - Would therefore most respectfully request that you will enact a Law reviving said office and reinstate the late Judge of Probate [Philip Aldrick], legalising any proceedings which he may have done as said Judge (not contrary to the statute). since the abolition of said office and to continue until January 1st 1845 and that at the next general election and annually thereafter. the said office shall be filled by the qualified voters of this county, as in other County offices
And as in duty bound Your petitioners will ever pray
