To the Honorable the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Wisconsin

The remonstrance of the undersigned citizens of Milwaukee County respectfully represents, that they have been informed that petitions have been in circulation for signatures praying your Honorable body to pass a law the tendency of which will be not only to retard but to prevent the immediate prosecution of the Milwaukee and Rock River Canal. Against the passage of any such law the undersigned beg leave most earnestly sincerely and respectfully to remonstrate.

Many of our Fellow Citizens liveing upon the Canal reservation have been taxed double price for their lands, the full amount of which many of them have already cheerfully paid upon the sacred condition as they believed secured by law - hoping and believing that the speedy construction of said Canal by affording a market for their produce and other benefits to be derived from the construction of said work, would compensate them for this additional price - And now we would ask would it be right that they should be deprived of these just benefits? We think it would be rank and manifest injustice. And would therefore pray your Honorable body not only to reject all propositions which would in any way be calculated to retard this important Territorial Work but to adopt such measures as will enable the Agents of the Territory to negociate the loan authorised by law and adopt such other measures, as will secure the immediate and vigorous prosecution of this important work.

And as in duty bound we will ever pray. December 1840
