To the Honorable the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Wisconsin

The petition of Philip Schaumberg of Prairie du Chien in the County respectfully represents.

That he was formerly a citizen of the State of New York and came to Prairie du Chien aforesaid upwards of ten years since where has since resided; that upon leaving New York, from considerations entirely of a family character, he assumed the name of William Wilson, by which name only he has been known in this territory. Your petitioner further represents that during his residence at Prairie du Chien aforesaid he has endeavored, by industry and good conduct, to merit and receive the confidence of his fellow citizens, which confidence has been testified towards him upon more than one occasion that by his assumed name of William Wilson he has acquired considerable property, some of it real estate situate in said county upon which he has made valuable improvements, but some doubts have been suggested as to his right to hold property conveyed to him by any other than his true name, and inasmuch as persons may always be found who are ever ready to seek occasions for causing trouble to others, to obviate any difficulty growing out of the above circumstances, and to confirm your petitioner in his right and title to the property which he has honestly gained, your petitioner prays your Honorable Body to pass a law changing his name from Philip Schaumburg to William Wilson and confirming him in his right to all such
