Petition of Citizens of Milwaukee county praying that the office of county surveyor be abolished - Mr. Shephard

read & refund to the common county on [illegible] Jan 16, 1841

To the Honorable Legislature of the Territory of Wisconsin youre petitioner would represent that the office of county surveyor is one which confers a monopoly that we consider unnecessary improper & detrimental to the common interest of socity that it retards others from pursuing the science who are equally meritorious, therefore youre petitioners request that the last [illegible] the office be repealed, altered, or ammended in such forme that all persons who are desirous of pursuing the science of surveying may enjoy equality of privilege that the compensation be one dollar the first mile & seventy five cents for the ensuing one.
