Mr. Robert R. Ruthenberg:
If you only knew how much me and my sick wife need-
lessly have suffered for several years from the Negroes, then you wouldn't
even spit on these people much less want them on the south side. It h s [has]
been a very harrowing experience for the both of us. Furthermore, had we
received adequate police protection the bulk of the trouble they had
caused us could have been prevented. The journal of course, also pats the
police on the back, and has praised them to high heaven. However, they,
too, had failed to lift a finger to help us while we were in distress with
the Negroes. We have heard that the cop on the beat is hamstrung, however,
and that his hands so far as the colored people are concerned, are tied.
We underst nd [understand] the "higher ups" are responsible for it. Anyhow, whenever we
complained to the cops about the colored culprits why we merely exchanged
one problem for another. Consequently, we have stopped complaining to the
cops. We might as well talk to the wall. They coddle the colored people
and that's all there is to it. This is a [an] original shame of course. But,
now they are blaming their barbaric behavior on "slavery" you see. The
great NAACP says it is so, so let's all be stupid! Let's all swallow
this hogwash! Cordially yours,
Frank Evans
