P.S Yes, indeed, the Negroes
damaged our health as
well as drove us out of
our business but this fact
has not bothered Mrs. Vel
Phillips a bit either.
Yet, the Journal quoted the
Bible to you south siders!
How inconsistent can this
paper get?

Dear Mr. Ruthenberg:
I sure wish you together with some of the other south
siders would on Friday or Saturday night take a stroll in this neighbor-
erous conduct of the Negroes, both men and women. You'd have to see and
hear it yourselves before you could believe it. It really staggers the
belief. These primitive people shout and scream on the street from dusk to
dawn and make enough noise to wake the dead. They have caused both me and
my sick wife the tortures of the damned. They have frequently and flagran-
ly violated our human rights. Too, they have made three never to be for-
gotten attacks on my sick and suffering person as a totally disabled veteran
for no reason other than the savage and sadistic delight they had derived
from it. They refuse to live by the rules. They want "rights" without
any of the responsibilities. This is the true picture of most of the
residents of the so-called "inner core" section. So please don't let the
Journal feed you any fiction concerning it. This section is full of
drunken, dissipated, disorderly bums who have no respect for men or beast.
The men insult white women with impunity. My wife, too, has been subjected
to the most terrible indecencies, which, incidentally included the incest-
uous sex term implying relations with one's mother! Negro men, women
and children alike in this neighborhood use it freely in public as well as
on people and Mrs. Evans oftentimes has cried her eyes out after being
called mother-so- and so. The colored kids use this horrible expression
on the school playgrounds, too. It is very nasty and nauseating express-
ion and turns the stomach. However, for some reason or other they get by
with that, too. They get by with this terrible obscenity on this street.
So they most likely would get by with it on the south side, too. This, as
st ted in past correspondence is inexcusable and indefensible. They can't
very well bl me the use of this pig language on "poor housing" as they are
wont to do with Negro crime, delinquency and illegitimacy. They have
bl med the sun, the wind, the moon and the stars for their uncivilized and
"wild animal" behavior. It h s been anybody's fault but their own. There
of which equated with common sense. Today, however, if one tries to talk
sense on any given subject he is looked at in wonderment. Stupidity, it
seems is admired, common sense sneered t.
