Dear Sir
I received your letter from Dubuque and have to return my sincere thanks for your kindness in regard to the map & in offering to confer [strike] do [/strike] further favors. I have sent the [Fox?] receipt for the Milwaukee lot as directed and will send the receipt for the land as soon as it is received from Washington County, which will be in a few days.
I am much interested in Geology, and especially in our western geology: If therefore you can send me the reports of Owen, Jackson, & others I shall be much obliged. I want also the Land Office, & other Reports that contain matter relative to Wisconsin.
It is no more than right perhaps that Wisconsin should share in the "increase and diffusion of knowledge" contemplated by the Smithsonian Institution. If therefore you will endeavor to obtain for us copies of their Reports, Contributions & you would confer a favor of some importance. The Young men of our city of established a Library here, having already about one thousand

volumes. Perhaps the "Contributions" would be sent for their library as the principal [illegible] only one in this part of the country. I send a catalogue for Prof Henry which will be proof of my attention.
I send you with this also a note to Dr. Bache which I wish you would hand to him and add your request that he will grant me the small farm [asked?] of him.
Our friend Mr. Kilbourn is a candidate for the office of Senator in place of Hon J.P. [illegible] whose term expires in March next - We all hope he will be elected, and he stands about an even chance We shall know in a few days.
Very truly oyurs I.A. Lapham

To the Legislature and the Public
This is to certify that I have examined with care the large map of Wisconsin drawn by I. A. Lapham Esq. and find it to be very accurate and precisely correct as it [?]. This map contains much information not elsewhere to be found, and embodies all the drawings which have been made. As a geographical and topographical map it is greatly superior in every respect, (and especially in the [d?s] and which all the [?] are exhibited,) to any thing of kind [?] to published, and is highly worthy as [?] of the patronage of the State authorities and of the public.
Very Respectfully [?] Byron Kilbourn
