Document Title: Box 4, Folder 4: Typewritten Letters 1871-1875
Creator: Lapham, Increase Allen, 1811-1875; Lapham, Julia Alcott
Folder Description: This folder contains both personal and professional correspondences of Increase A. Lapham (1811-1875) for the years 1871 through 1875, divided into chapters 22 through 26 of a rough draft biography. Also in this folder are several drawings by Lapham and others, essays, lectures, and reports. Many of Lapham's professional works contain data from his experiments. Chapter 25 includes the essay "On the Relation of The Wisconsin Geological Survey to Agriculture", chapter 26 includes the essay "Reminiscences of Milwaukee County. The Claim Law of 1837 - First Agricultural Society - Plank Roads &c.", an essay written for the American Journal of Science titled "Geological Survey of Wisconsin"; and an essay title "Mound Builders. Models of Mounds Prepared for the Centennial '1876' of Philadelphia PA". A miscellaneous essay and map appear at the end of the folder titled "The Cranberry" and "Map of the Lakes & Drives, Around Oconomowoc, Wisconsin: A Favorite Summer Resort." The contents of this folder were transcribed by Lapham's daughter, Julia Alcott Lapham who began in the early 1870s to hand write and then type a chronology of her father's life titled "Autobiography". In the process she destroyed much of Increase Lapham's original correspondence. In the "Notes on Sources" section of the Lapham biography, Studying Wisconsin, the authors comment on the editing and destruction of the original correspondence: "Though she [Julia Lapham] apparently destroyed many original documents, enough remain that we can compare them to her typescript and see that her changes were several types. She corrected her father's spelling errors and punctuation. She omitted some family information that she considered too private. She included almost nothing about his financial or business dealings." Bergland, Martha, and Paul C. Hayes. "Notes on Sources." Studying Wisconsin The Life of Increase Lapham Early Chronicler of Plants, Rocks, Rivers, Mounds, and All Things Wisconsin.
