Commenced tour of exploration to reach Mississippi at La Crosse; went by plank road to Watertown; plank roads from Milwaukee; colder at Milwaukee than in interior; October 16. Went to Mineral Point with Josiah D. Whitney; descended to Bracken and Allen's mine; observations; specimens; rent paid by miners; wages; miners chiefly Cornish; drifts from main shaft; water kept out by ox pump; horse than lead ore; zinc thrown away; many mines exhausted; Oct. 18. Examined copper mines southeast of Mineral Point. Typewritten copy, pp 930-954.
