Lapham, I[ncrease] A[llen]. [Milwaukee.] Lecture [on "Temperance"] Before Oregon Temperance League, Milwaukee. No religion without temperance; clergymen beginning to recognize need of advocating temperance; success of Quakers due to adherence to Temperance principles; first to adopt them; Lapham's home influences; youth should be trained at home; compares danger to that of man above Niagara Falls; social power of liquor; courage needed; community. should provide suitable places of amusement as European countries do; United States compared with France; quotation from Silliman's Journal; necessity for temperance in speech; looseness leads to recklessness in conduct; responsibility of "ladies" on New Year's Day; why temperance question (See next card)

McDonaugh, Thomas. Engineer, Fond du Lac. To Lapham. Railroad elevations not yet determined, except at Horicon Pond, 120 feet above Lake Winnebago; seventeen miles of road being constructed; has notes on two artesian wells dug for railroad; sketch of profile; bottom of Lake Horicon thrown up with loud report every winter; will study phenomenon.
